This is a custom board by me, based on a publicly available schematic on Console5.com's TechWiki. This board is as compact as I can make it and can be used in any NES to add Composite Video and Stereo Sound output. For a front-loader NES, this board can be used specifically for Stereo out only (although that would be a waste of money). For a Top Loader or Famicom, this board can be used to add a complete Composite out solution.

Original schematic can be found here:

This board comes with a few options for connectivity:

  • SNES Style Multi-Out (Composite only, for RGB you need the RGB mod)
  • Classic RCA Jacks (We have them available in a kit)
  • TRRS Connector (prevents the need for modifying the console shell, but sacrifices RF out)

Simple instructions:

Composite Video

  • Cut and lift pin 21 of the PPU from the NES motherboard. Connect this to "P21 IN".
  • Connect a wire from "P21 OUT" to the NES motherboard where pin 21 was previously connected. This step is optional and will allow you to maintain RF output.
  • Connect +5V to one of the following:
    • On a top loader, use R1's via closest to the PPU.
    • On any console, you can tap the +5V rail of the L7805 Voltage Regulator.
  • Connect GND to any grounding point. I typically tap the Voltage Regulator for both GND and +5V.
  • Connect "Y" to the center post of your RCA Jack (or to the appropriate location on the TRRS connector).
  • Connect "GND" to the exterior of your RCA Jack(s).

Stereo Out

  • Connect CPU Pin 1 to "CPU P1".
  • Connect CPU Pin 2 to "CPU P2".
  • Connect "R" to the center post of your RCA Jack (or the appropriate location on the TRRS connector).
  • Connect "W" to the center post of your RCA Jack (or the appropriate location on the TRRS connector).
  • Connect "GND" to the exterior of your RCA Jacks(s).

Please Note: If you are installing this mod in a Famicom (either the OG or a top loader), you will not have expansion audio. In order to preserve expansion audio, tap into Cartridge Pin 46 and attach it to either CPU Pin 1 or 2 along with the appropriate CPU wire (IE: Two wires on a single pad). I prefer to attach it to CPU Pin 2.

If you are not comfortable with doing this mod yourself, I am able to complete this for you. Reach out to me on Facebook or via email at [email protected] and we can discuss, as I am not always accepting new mod work.
